The Man Who Rescued Norwich’s Sinking Bus

With a heavy heart, we share the passing of Mr. Keith Edward Alexander, who died peacefully at home on October 25, 2025, at the age of 82. Keith’s life and career will forever be remembered for his remarkable role in one of Norwich’s most extraordinary events—the recovery of the double-decker bus that sank into a chalk mine crater on Earlham Road in 1988.

That incident, which made headlines around the world, cemented Keith’s place in local history. With skill, perseverance, and teamwork, he successfully removed the stricken Number 26 Eastern Counties bus, returning it intact to the company. His calm determination during the “bus in a hole” rescue reflected the qualities that defined his life: resilience, resourcefulness, and an unwavering commitment to helping others. Born on August 20, 1943, Keith grew up in Mile Cross with his grandparents, Albert and Ellen Long. His entrepreneurial spirit was evident from an early age, whether through paper rounds or selling odds and ends. At 16, he began an apprenticeship at a local garage, sparking a lifelong passion for mechanics. Though a serious motorcycle accident cost him a leg, Keith’s determination never faltered. He learned to walk again with an artificial leg and returned to the garage industry, building a career that would inspire many.

In 1970, Keith founded Norfolk Recovery, starting with a single modified Land Rover and growing into a thriving business known for its reliability and innovation. He later expanded operations to a landmark site on Havers Road, where his towering blue crane became a familiar sight. Keith’s work ethic was unmatched—on call 24 hours a day—and his mentorship helped many young employees launch successful careers of their own. Beyond his business, Keith contributed nationally as a council member of the Association of Vehicle Recovery Operators, shaping safety standards and training. He worked closely with police and fire services, supporting accident responses and participating in community fundraising events.

After retiring in 2007, Keith enjoyed life in Little Melton and at his villa in Cyprus, spending time with family, friends, and on his beloved boat. Despite health challenges, he remained positive and determined, embodying the resilience that defined his journey.

Keith leaves behind his partner Marlene Innes, daughter Julie, sons Glenn, Scott, and Craig, as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His funeral will be held at St Catherine’s Church, Mile Cross, on November 19, 2025, followed by a committal at City Cemetery, Norwich.

RIP Mr. Keith Edward Alexander (1943–2025)
